Brush is an essential tool in Oriental art. Made from animal hair like fox, hare, sable, or goat, these brushes are soft but springy. Sensitive to even a slight pressure, they are difficult to control and the practice is needed. There are about three hundred varieties in Chinese brush and more than five hundred of brand names. This huge variety is largely responsible for their varied uses in painting and calligraphy. A new brush comes with its pointed tip glued in most cases. Steep the tip in cool water until the glue is dissolved completely before the first use. Wash the tip clean after each use. Blot it on a strip of rice paper and let it air-dry. A carefully treated brush can last for many years. |
