Liquid Chinese Ink
Made by mixing the soot of burning pine or tungoil with gelatin, Chinese ink in liquid form is known as 'Indian ink' to the West. (Though some proprietary liquid Indian inks nowadays are still made from Chinese ink sticks, generally Indian ink is a different blend of carbon pigment suspensions in synthetic binding material.) There are seven grades in liquid Chinese ink, the same grading of sticks. To improve its quality of tonal graduation on rice paper or silk, add little water to the ink then rub it with a stick. Always store the ink bottle in a cool place and avoid direct sunlight.
