Oriental ink in liquid form is known as Indian ink to the West. (Though some proprietary liquid Indian inks nowadays are still made from Chinese ink sticks, generally Indian ink is a different blend of carbon pigment suspensions in synthetic binding material.) These inks are made by by mixing the soot of burning pine or tungoil with gelatin, the same way ink sticks are made. Liquid ink usually produces lighter tones on rice paper or silk than that from rubbing a stick. To improve the tonal quality, add little water to the ink then rub it with a stick. Store the bottle in a cool place and avoid direct sunlight.
