Rice Straw Paper

This is a versatile 2-ply rice paper.

In painting, the paper intrigues artists for its strength and thickness. When a heavy coat of paint is applied to the paper, the under layer of the paper functioned as a blotting paper, taking up extra moisture from top layer while the full-bodied tonal effect being perfectly preserved.

In oriental printmaking, this rice paper is favored for its stable ink response to the printing blocks. In mounting, the paper is the most often used as backing paper for its tenacity and smoothness. In Chinese calligraphy, it was a tribute to court artists for its elegant appearance. Some of its many other uses were paper umbrella, fireworks, paper fan, and bank note in feudal China.
