About Ouyang Xun (557 - 641) The Spring, 632 Stele, 87 x 93 cm. Ink rubbing on rice paper, Song dynasty Regular script reached a perfect stage in the beginning of the Tang dynasty. Ouyang Xun, one of Four Tang Masters, stands for this achievement. His brushwork is both easy and precise; his expression is both graceful and earnest. The noted feature of his characters is the steepness, an impression derived from the presence of sunken character sides and antenna-like vertical strokes. Reading his script is as visiting a remote mountain, jagged and chilly, but full of spirit, praised Ming painter-calligrapher Cheng Jiru. Written in his later years, this work has a milder temperament than his early ones. The text records the event of how Tang emperor Taizhong found a springhead in his summer palace.
