Cai Xiang (1012 - 1067)
Wanan Bridge
stele, 156 x 280 cm
Ink rubbing on rice paper

Enjoying writing in meticulous, slow-paced regular script, Cai Xiang was least sentimental, thus most classic, calligrapher in Four Song Masters. His regular characters are gentle and peaceful with a beautifully elegant expression. “Cai Xiang is gifted as well as erudite. He can write his mind with ease, which gives his calligraphy an unpredictably changeful appearance and earns him the best calligrapher in modern times,” commented his contemporary Su Shi.

There are 153 characters in this inscription, recording the construction of Wanan Bridge, a stone bridge across Luoyang River in Fujian built in 1053 under the supervision of Cai Xiang, the then Governor of Quanzhou. The original script was inscribed on the cliff facing Luoyang River. Rubbing in this model is from the stele reinscribed in 1119.
