Ritual Implements, 156
Stele, 78 x 170 x 20 cm.
Ink rubbing on rice paper, Qing dynasty

This inscription is typical clerical script - flat characters with their key strokes in shape of silkworm head and swallow tail. Its vigorous, dignified, and unrestrained brushwork made it the best clerical script writing in the history of Chinese calligraphy. “All the script conceptions of Han steles seem fathomable except this one. Its script is nature's mystery - within sight but beyond reach,” remarked a critic of the 15th century.

The stele recorded the event of renovation of the Confucius Temple and the making of ritual implements for the temple. The earliest survived rubbing of the stele is from the 17th century. The rubbing in this copybook is from the 18th century with two characters had partially denuded since.
