Huang Tingjian (1045 - 1105)
Two Poems
Ink on rice paper, 29 x 213 cm.
Huang Tingjian was the founder of School of Jiangxi in Chinese poem, and one of Four Song Masters in Chinese calligraphy. Banished twice from the court and died in a strange land, his life was full of turns and setbacks. Like many other great Chinese scholars who had frustrated official career, he voiced his bitterness through an unconventional style.
In calligraphy, he deviated from the norm of orthodox Chinese calligraphy school by an avant-garde exaggeration. Done very much at the surge of his moods and feelings, his rapidly drawn and uninhibitedly stretching strokes, often likened to oars rolling a boat, give an expression of grace and heroism.
This work is a collection of two Buddhist discipline poems by different authors - Master Hanshan, a legendary vernacular verse writer, and Pang Yun, a lay Buddhist.
