Scroll Mounting Technique
Mounting hanging bars
- The upper hanging bar is a 1/2 inch square wooden slat with a slight arch at the top, and lower hanging bar is a round dowel about 1 1/2 inches thick. They must be dry, clean, smooth, straight and free of any defect. With the scroll facing up split lower paper sleeve by a bamboo knife and fold the silk back.

- Making four rings by cutting 32 gauge copper wire 2 1/2 inches long, looping it around a 7-inch nail and pinching it in the shape of a cotter pin.

Saw the upper hanging bar exactly the same width of upper paper sleeve. Two inner rings take about 2/5 of the length, and outer rings take about 3/5 of the ends. Drill 3/32 inch holes through the side and fix the rings in place. Wrap the ends with supported silk.

- Measure and mark out the width of lower hanging bar. Wrap a strip of paper at the mark and draw a pencil line. Saw around the line and chisel the end into a dowel joint. Wrap the ends with supported silk and glue scroll caps to the joints.

- With the scroll facing down, fold the upper paper sleeve back. Sit and align the upper bar at the seam with its rings facing up. Wrap the paper sleeve one full turn around the upper bar. Let the rings pierce through. Take upper bar off and cut off any extra paper sleeve. Apply paste to the silk and 3/4 inch of the paper sleeve with a cutting board underneath. Replace the upper bar and wrap the paper sleeve and then the silk tight. Turn the scroll over. With a strip of rice paper press and smooth out the silk.

- With the scroll facing up, paste a 1/2 inch wide 1 1/4 inch long supported silk strip to either end of the seam as reinforcement. Apply paste to 1/2 inch of silk and 3/4 inch of lower paper sleeve. Place and align lower hanging bar at the seam and roll it outward. On the edge of pasted area, wrap the paper sleeve around it and roll it back tight. Check if it is parallel to the seam. If yes, roll it across the seam and wrap the silk.
