Scroll Mounting Technique

Trimming a supported work

  1. Slide a bamboo knife under the paper loop, loosening two edges of the supporting rice paper, and tearing it off from the mounting board diagonally.

  2. With the supported work facing up, trim the edge that has narrowest margin, usually the one bearing signature or seal, by a ruler and a cutting knife. Hold the ruler firm and the knife steady.

  3. Bend the work and align the trimmed edge. Keep the fold in place by a ruler. Stick a mark on the untrimmed side by a needle awl. Unfold the work and trim the edge even according to the marks.

  4. Bend the work with both trimmed sides aligned. Stick a needle mark on either corner of the untrimmed edge by a needle awl. Unfold the work and trim the edges even according to the marks. Check the squareness by bending the work vertically and horizontally. Redo the trimming if any deviation is found.
