Scroll Mounting Technique

Waxing

  1. Leave the scroll on the mounting board for at least ten days. On a sunny day, slide a bamboo knife under the paper loop, loosening the edges of the scroll but the top and tearing it off. Once the scroll is off the mounting board, it should be waxed as soon as possible.

  2. Place the scroll facing down on a flat working surface and put a smooth sheet of rice paper underneath. Check and scrape off any foreign substance in the backing paper.

  3. Evenly rub white wax on entire back of the scroll. Starting from the top, push and pull the waxing stone with steady pressure across the scroll. Turn the scroll the other way around and give it another round of polishing. This will protect the artwork from being sanded during repeated opening and rolling-up.

  4. Fold the backing paper just behind the scroll and trim its edges off.
